    Description

This early original pair of insignia for an Officer in the Army's U.S. Chemical Warfare Service was used from December 1926 through World War II.
It depicts a benzene ring superimposed in the center of crossed retorts.  The U.S. Chemical Warfare Service was formed as a separate Army branch in response to the use of chemical warfare in World War I.  (Note: The name was changed in 1946 to the Chemical Corps.)
This style insignia was first used in 1917, and the new regulations issued in 1924 added the cobalt blue enamel to the benzene ring.
This size insignia was specified as 1 3/16 inches in Army Regulation 600-35 issued in December 1926.
This pair of insignia has the original period attachment nuts present for one pin. Note that the attaching nuts date this insignia to pre-WWII.
