    THIRD AFGHAN WAR MILITARY COVER – DATED 23/JUL/19
    The key to the validity that this cover is from the 3rd Afghan War are its postal cancellations. This is the problem in that it appears these postal stamps were field modified to show that the year was (19)19. Please check out my third photo which shows a side by side
    comparison
    of the two postal stamps that are complete, the third postal stamp shows no year!
    The stamp on the left side
    definitely shows the year
    "19" although the form of the 9 appears to be somewhat sloppy. The stamp on the right shows why I believe the date on the stamp was modified. I believe the last number was originally a three this is due to the little "point"
    pointing
    to the left half way up the "stem" of the nine. It looks just like the point in the "3" in the 23 on the stamp on the left. However the rest of the three has been modified to
    straighten
    out the back of the "3" and get rid of the indent behind the "point". Also the top and bottom of the three have been modified to change the overall shape to resemble a "9".
    Simply the "9" on the right looks as much like a 3 as it does a 9. Please note these two stamps were modified in two different cities miles apart so the modified 9's should not look identical
    This is a very large cover measuring 13¾” by 5”
    It is addressed to “The Chief Medical Officer N.W.F.P.
    Peshawar

    There is also a stamp which reads “FIELD SERVICE ???? FREE”
    And a hand written notation “

    This was a short war lasting 87 days. It started
    on
    6 May 1919 when the Emirate of
    Afghanistan
    invaded British India and ended with an armistice on 8 August 1919.
    I have no idea how many covers are available from this war but I find it difficult to believe a lot exist
    especially
    in as nice a condition as this cover. Due to its length this cover has 6 folds yet in my opinion the cover is visually very pleasing
    This item will be folded when mailed but I will try to limit the number of folds.
