Here is one of the nicest military photo albums I have had.
It belonged and was compiled by a Charles Hey from Fort Collins Colorado who according to a subsequent service record report loose in the album served from August 2, 1926 to August 1, 1930 as Gunner’s Mate 3
rd
class aboard the USS Colorado.
This album documents those 4 years of service with over 490 photos I counted.
It’s a massive photo album that is 100% his military service.
A faded USS Colorado is on the front cover.
There is a nice selection of amateur photos he took plus commercial photos and real photo postcards.
The topics include life aboard ship, military training, ports of call, many photos of local “friendly women companions”, military topics, funny goofing off, football, boxing, etc.
There are pictures of early sea planes, one of a submarine.
The most unusual photos are about 10 commercial postcard size photos of executions in China.
These appear to be the only pictures of China though.
The real photo postcards are of military subjects, foreign locations and there are several that are Navy cartoon images that appear to have been produced by Bear photography from San Francisco California.
Locations identified include Panama City, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Hawaii, San Francisco and some that appear to be of New York
Almost all photos are corner mounted and some towards the beginning of the album have faded notations in white lettering.
There are probably 50 loose photos that likely have fallen out over time.
All pages are still attached to the binding as are the covers.
Probably 6 pages toward the front have some chipping on the middle of the bottom border but it does not impact the photos.
There are spots with missing photos but probably many of these are the loose photos previously mentioned.
An exceptional U.S. Navy album in between the wars with nearly 500 photographs.
